The Elf Woodworking Ideas and Training

When children and parents work together in the woodworking workshop children learn skills and are left with special memories that will be with them their entire life. As an elf apprentice the gifts that are built in the woodshop are very special and filled with a special magic. Widget and Fidget want to help teach you about that woodshop magic!

Woodworking is a great activity for children of all ages.

Even smallest elf apprentices  love woodworking, but it's good to start out slow. There are many wood kits that are simple to assemble with only a couple of small hand tools. Here are a few articles on the benifits.

Equipping the Elf Woodworking Workshop

Having the right tools and safty equipment your elf workshop is very important. Most kid tools are not much more than toys and grown up tools are usually awkward for small hands to use. So we have spent a lot of time researching and testing tools to find the best childrens tools available. Then we found the best prices we could.

Tools and Wood Kits
Highland Woodworking carries Red Toolbox, one of our favorite children tools and wood project kits companies. Highland prices are the lowest we could find online. (Amazon doesn't even come close) They also have an advance woodworking kit that they have assembled themselves.

Tool Boxes
Every elf apprentice needs a tool box, so with Elf Aprentices Ayden & CJ's help we built these small wood tool boxes.

Picture
The boxes are made out of 5' of 1x 6 and a 1' of 3/4" dowel rod.
Measure and cut three 1' sections and two 10 1/2 " sections. The three 1' sections will make up the sides and bottom. The two 10 1/2 will make up the ends. Also Cut the dowel rod to one foot, so you have all the cutting done.

After the cuts be sure to sand all the rough edges off the boards. (Using Sanding sponges are great for children) With a 3/4" woodbit you can drill your holes for the handle now if you wish or wait until the box is together. Place the holes 1 1/4 inches from the top and 1 5/8 from the sides on each end

Remember  SAFTY FIRST and  Childrens Rules for Cutting
After sanding you can start to glue the box together. The sides of the box  get glued to each side of your bottom board. Then the ends are glued on top of the bottom board between the two sides. After gluing together position clamps on each side to hold together while drying. After the toolbox is dry nail securely with small brads or nails.

Set the nails with a nail set to just below the surface of the wood. Fill the nail holes with wood filler, let dry, and sand smooth. Now it's time to put you elfish creativity to work and panit it!
